Blame it on Gatsby fever or the mop of ultra-shiny curls at Jason Wu’s Spring/Summer 2013 runway, but the crimped hair style that defined 1920s glam has made waves again this season. The Marcel wave (or, the “finger wave”, as it’s colloquially known) is a must-try summer hair style for a sophisticated retro throwback that works for chic night out or as a bridal look.“A woman who wears this hair style exudes confidence and is definitely fashionable!” says Dan Nguyen, a celebrity hair stylist and founder of LURE Salon in Vancouver. Nguyen, who can be found backstage styling looks at Giorgio Armani and Viktor & Rolf during fashion week, gives us his expert tips on how to get this classic, feminine retro wave.

Get the retro hair look: Be like Zelda Fitzgerald

Created by François Marcel (the French hair stylist who invented the curling iron,) the eponymous wave that has become synonymous with old-school glamour also has a dark side to it. “Shorter hair in the ‘20s was popularized by socialites like Zelda Fitzgerald, who epitomized a life of glamour and rebellion,” says Nguyen, who lists iconic short-haired celebs of that era—Clara Bow, Joan Crawford and Louise Brooks—with whom Zelda hosted lavish parties along with her husband, The Great Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald.

“This was a way for woman to defy the feminine convention that was set up by their elders—short hair, dressing with legs and arms exposed, and wearing makeup echoed the exciting times and the birth of celebrity culture.”

Get the retro hair look: Prep hair
While this perfectly badass curl is typically styled on short hair, the good news is that most lengths can wear the finger wave, says Nguyen. “Shorter styles and longer lengths with layering will work best.” What you need on hand: clean, just-washed hair, a fine-tooth comb and quality hair care products. “I recommend the Gel Serum from Oribe or the Color Minded UV Protective Styling Balm from Bumble & Bumble,” he says.

Get the retro hair look: All hands on deck If you don’t have a curling iron, don’t fret: it’s called the finger wave for a reason. Comb wet hair and divide small sections into a wave pattern, pinning into place and allowing hair to air-dry. “Once it’s dry you can brush it out to give it a lovely airy texture or break it up with your fingers,” says Nguyen. Finish off with shine-inducing spray for the glossy Jason Wu spring hair-inspired finish. “A lightweight shine spray will add that wonderful reflective quality,” says Nguyen, who recommends Oribe Shine Light Reflecting Spray. “Weightless and ultra-shiny!”

Get the retro hair look: Go pro (if need be) For major events such as your wedding or flapper parties (your excuse to have one of those now), Nguyen recommends seeking out a hair stylist for the perfect retro look. “This is a very difficult style to achieve, mostly because you have to work on the top of your head.” But as we imagine Daisy Buchanan flitting about in a white flowing gown, the key is to have fun when sporting this stylishly iconic coif. “Go sleek and shiny for nighttime and brush it out for daytime, or vice versa!” he adds. “As long as you have the confidence to pull it off and the time to style it, anyone can rock this look.” Our summer look just got infinitely more Gatsby.

Thirteen Vancouver salons will be using their talents and scissors next week to help raise funds for the Hematology Research and Clinical Trials Unit for Leukemia & Lymphoma at VGH. The first annual Beautify Me Vancouver aims to also raise awareness for blood cancers in a new way.

Spearheaded by Kimberly Hoogendoorn, Senior Designer at LURE Salon, the event began in 2011 as Cut for The Cure. After seeing her uncle, LURE Salon’s co-owner Dan Nguyen, battle the blood disease in 2010, Kimberly wanted to find ways to give back to the VGH unit that helped her family.

“When I was with my uncle, with his doctors, one of the things that came up was how the Leukemia and Lymphoma unit at VGH is one of the best in the world. A lot of their funds come from charities, and it kind of just clicked with me. The people were so amazing there and he was getting better on the accounts of people fundraising. I was so grateful that they were able to do something for him that I wanted to give back as well,” said Kimberly.

She began Cut for the Cure, and for the first two years it was a single day event. The two events to date have raised over $30,000 for the cause. But Kimberly said there was only so much you could do in one day.

“This year I wanted it to be bigger, I want to raise awareness everywhere, and more money for them [VGH],” she said. And from there, with the help of other Vancouver salons, Kimberly was able to create Beautify Me Vancouver. The event will run in-salon from April 15 to 20, 2013. Think Dine Out Vancouver, but with salon and spa services instead of food, and with proceeds being donated to the cause. The salons include LURE, Is. Salon, Rain Salon, Axis (both locations), Bling Nail Studio, Luxe Beauty Lounge, Sense Spa, Space Salon, Caramel Salon (both locations), VHA (Vancouver Hairdressing Academy), and Silk Hair Design & Esthetics. Each of the salons has featured menus to choose from.

To jump start the five-day event, a Fashion & Beauty Fundraising Gala will be hosted at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia on Monday, April 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $80 can be purchased here or at LURE Salon. All proceeds will benefit the Hematology Research and Clinics Trails Unit for Leukemia & Lymphoma at VGH.

According to the VGH Foundation, approximately 2,000 new cases of blood diseases including leukemia are diagnosed each year in B.C. Support from donors has a direct impact on the lives of patients and families affected by blood cancers by enhancing the care of the Hematology unit, which provides research and care for patients.

Kimberly said her uncle is doing really well now, and although he is still in treatment, he is almost in the clear. And with this year’s event, she is not associating a dollar amount to her goal.

“This is something I am passionate about and so thankful for. I am grateful for all the support,” she said.

Here is our story and how it came to be -Kimberly Hoogendoorn

On November 30th 2010 my uncle, who is LURE Salon’s co-owner, was diagnosed with leukemia. When a loved one is suddenly faced with the diagnosis of a blood cancer, you desperately want to hear that there is hope and that a treatment is available. We are so grateful for the Hematology Research and Clinical Trial Unit and their commitment to provide patients with the newest and most effective treatments available. Without this my Uncle Dan wouldn’t be here with us.

We are so blessed that Dan Nguyen is healthy so we decided that we would get involved and give back. For the past two years LURE Salon team have hosted a “Cut for the Cure” and raised over $30,000. This year we want to get more people involved and raise even more awareness about blood cancers in Vancouver. We will be spearheading the first annual “Beautify Me Vancouver” and this will run from April 15-20th, 2013. The concept will be similar to Dine out Vancouver, but with salon/spa services instead of food! This is a battle Dan and many others continue to wage against blood cancers and without the support of people like you, their recovery would not be possible.

April 15-20th are the dates set for Beautify Me Vancouver – a fundraising campaign being championed by Lure Salon. It opens with a fabulous Gala Ball at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia on the 15th and then continues in the salon through the 20th with a menu of special services. 25% of proceeds will go to the Hematology Research and Clinical Trial Unit for Leukemia and Lymphoma at Vancouver General Hospital. But before I give you more information on how to be involved, I want to take a moment to share the incredible personal story behind the founding of this event. It all starts with salon co-owner Dan Nguyen.

Dan’s Story – Nguyen had been feeling off his game for almost a year, but blamed being tired on the incredible schedule he kept. There were 12 plus hour days, mentoring of his young staff at Lure Salon, trips to NYC-Paris-Milan to work with his mentor – Oribe – at high profile shows. Of course he was tired! Then one day at a creative shoot he stuck his finger with a bobby pin and it didn’t stop bleeding for hours. The day he was diagnosed with Leukemia, he even went to work out with a personal trainer as he thought he just needed to sweat it out. “This has always worked for me all through my entire 25 years career. I have never called in sick and always worked through everything. Until that day, I’d always pushed and pushed my limits.”

The journey through treatment and recovery came with many lessons. Nguyen is now trying to learn to listen to his body and feels tremendous gratitude for family, friends and work as he has been buoyed by their strong support. And he will always be grateful for the amazing, consistent and dignified care he received from the doctor’s and nurses at VGH. He shares, “The experience has taught me so much and has rocked me to the core. It has brought a lot of positives to the forefront and the realization of having to accept life’s limitations. I’m so grateful to be alive and feel it’s my duty to bring awareness and raise money for VGH Blood Cancers Research.“

Kim’s Story - Hoogendoorn still remembers the day the phone call came as clearly as if it was yesterday. ”It was early morning and I was working out at the gym. I almost fell off the treadmill. All I could remember thinking was this just isn’t possible. Uncle Dan had always been a huge role model in my life and such a STRONG person.” Although shock set it, there were things to be done. Working on autopilot she began calling his clients to cancel appointments and share the news. Then it was time to head to the hospital. Family and a very supportive medical team were crucial during the coming months. “I’m so fortunate to have such a loving and close knit family. There was a distinctive aroma on the Leukemia floor – home cooked Vietnamese food made by my Aunt Soung and incredible Ba Ngoai (grandmother) which helped us deal with the long hours at the hospital.” Staff at the salon stepped into hyperdrive to make sure all Nguyen’s worries were dealt with. While on the ward, Hoogendoorn became aware that specialized units like the one helping her uncle were often shut down for lack of funding. This drove her to start researching how to give back. In 2011, the first Lure Salon Cut for the Cure raised $13,000 for the Hematology Research and Clinical Trials Unit at VGH. In 2012 the total was a whopping $17,000. The kick-off opening gala on April 15th will be an evening full of fashion, dance, drinks and fun. Included in your entry fee is a first drink of choice and some delicious appies. From April 16th – 20th, Beautify Me Vancouver moves into the Lure Salon. Based on the Dine-out format, stylists are offering a “MENU” of services to choose from with 25% of proceeds being donated to the charity. Bookings fill up quickly, especially if you have a favourite stylist, so it’s important to get your appointment scheduled early by calling 604-669-5878. Unable to attend? The salon has sent up a donation page on the VGH website – just click HERE. Lure’s fundraising goal this year is $13,000 and I know this dedicated team will meet their goal – especially with your support.

Vancouver

Who knows voluminous manes better than a man who has created them for the Victoria’s Secret Angels? “Every hair type looks better with some volume, and I notice that big, bouncy hair makes most women feel more confident,” confides Dan Nguyen, principal at Vancouver’s Lure Salon, who’s also coiffed models for Reem Acra, Armani Privé and Skaist Taylor. “Just don’t go Texas. Think Versace,” he advises.
It starts in the shower. A good volumizing shampoo and conditioner “will set you in the proper direction.”
Use volumizing products at the root. Lure can barely keep Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray on shelves, and Nguyen’s a fan of Bumble & Bumble’s Thickening line, too.
Over-direct your blow dry.
Set hair in a large barrel curling iron or Velcro rollers and be rewarded with extra lift, hold and structure.
Take small, horizontal sections around the crown and backcomb, baby.
